On January 4th, 2017 I flew back to Los Angeles with a rescue named Ginger. She'd been a companion to a dog that ate his kibble. Following his example she ate enough kibble to stay alive, but lived with runny stools. When I was a kid the #1 dog food was horsemeat in a can called Ken-L-Ration. But Ken-L-Ration isn't made any more because pet food producers can make more money selling overcooked, carbo-nuggets. Without her kibble-eating companion to set the example Ginger wouldn’t eat kibble. Then I discovered Pet Fooled the documentary, which introduced me to species-appropriate food. After extensive research and food trials, I developed a recipe referencing the PMR (Prey Model Raw) diet that delivers the full range of essential nutrients a typical domestic dog (or cat) needs BUT, only using ungulate ingredients from 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised and wild livestock. Our meals have proven to be "doggy delicious" while adding muscle, refining body definition, reducing shedding, sweet breath and ending up as  firm, healthy stools. But my Boxer-mix suffered from what I would learn is Boxer Colitis. So, I took a deeper dive into canine nutrition and discovered that our raw meals were missing the digestive fermentation found in whole prey. Since our human-grade production facility is not allowed to include the bacteria and microorganisms that create fermentation I tried adding raw apple cider vinegar to her meals. The colitis was checked but she ate grass between meals. I added low-sodium fermented leafy greens (spinach, kale and cabbage) to add fiber and her grass-eating stopped. My ultimate feeding trial was to replace a portion of our meals with whole ground (small) prey. Mother Nature didn’t disappoint. 

    Rawsome Meals won two international awards for most innovative pet meals in 2022 and has been nominated again for 2023.
