Cats need "real food", too!
Cats need "real food", too!
Cats are obligate carnivores: Animals that need to eat meat to remain healthy. Cats can digest plant matter but plants do not satisfy a cat's nutritional needs.
This African Black-Footed Cat may remind you of your pet cat, but with a 60% hunting success rate this feline is considered the most lethal hunter in the cat family. Just 2lbs., they will eat locusts but prefer gerbils and small birds, which they can grab in-flight.
Cats come in three sizes; small, medium and big. Big cats prey primarily on large and medium ungulates. Medium cats prey on small ungulates and rodents. Small cats prey on rodents, birds and insects. But, no matter their size cats need whole prey or the equivalent to maintain optimal health.
Commercial wet cat food is sold in small cans and pouches so you've probably never calculated the price per pound. In fact, commercial cat food averages $10 to $15 a pound, which is a high price to pay for a product that likely contains downed and diseased animal parts. Moreover, if you check the label you may see the term "crude" in front of each nutrient. This word hides the fact that the FDA allows manufacturers to include hide and hair, which have a much higher "crude protein factor" than muscle meat but are much less nutritious and bioavailable.
Should you add fermented plants when feeding RAWsome Meals to cats? A teaspoon or so of raw apple cider vinegar per quarter pound of food should be sufficient. But, your cat would also enjoy any of our whole prey as a meal by itself, which already contains fermented plants. Feel free to try both RAWsome Meals and whole prey.
