The RAwsome Meals Story
On January 4th, 2017 I flew back to Los Angeles with the first dog of my own. Ginger had been a companion of a dog that ate his kibble and she followed his example, eating enough kibble to stay alive even though it gave her runny stools. But, without her companion setting the example she wouldn't eat kibble. Not knowing any better, I simply bought more expensive kibbles. But, no matter the brand or price paid she wouldn't eat it. Thinking she might have parasites I took her to a vet who declared her parasite-free but pumped her full of antibiotics anyway and sold me a bag of kibble for dogs with sensitive stomachs, as the solution. She wouldn’t touch the vet's kibble, either. By this time Ginger had lost so much weight that she looked like a hungry stray. I was concerned that my ignorance would kill my dog who was smart enough to know what not to eat. Luckily, I discovered the movie, Pet Fooled, where I learned about species-appropriate nutrition. This put me on the path to developing recipes that Ginger would eat, that put weight on and normalized her stools, except for the intermittent bout of colitis. Taking a deeper dive into canine nutrition I found that raw apple cider vinegar with mother or fermented greens stimulated healthy digestion and eliminated her colitis.
Update: More than 4 years later at 6-1/2 years old Ginger, a Boxer-mix, maintains the physique and energy of a much younger dog and is still enthusiastic about her meals.
