The RAwsome Meals Story
On January 4th, 2017 I flew back to Los Angeles with Ginger, my first dog since childhood. She'd been a companion to a dog that ate his kibble, and she followed his lead eating enough to stay alive but living with runny stools. Without her kibble-eating companion to set the example Ginger wouldn't eat kibble no matter the brand or price paid. A local vet found no problem but pumped her full of antibiotics and sold me a bag of kibble for dogs with sensitive stomachs. She wouldn’t eat it and soon lost so much weight that she looked like a hungry stray. I became anxious that she would get sick and possibly die. Luckily, I discovered the documentary, Pet Fooled, and was introduced to species-appropriate meals. The meals I ultimately developed added muscle, reduced shedding and firmed-up Ginger’s stool. But, now that she was eating again it became apparent she was prone to colitis. So, I took a deeper dive into canine nutrition and discovered that fermented foods were the solution. Fermented vegetables are ideal because they include fiber, which is one reason why dogs eat grass. But raw apple cider vinegar with mother works, too. Both create a healthy gut, aid digestion and promote general wellness. At almost 7, Ginger has the physique and energy of a young dog. Mission accomplished.
