The RAwsome Meals Story
On January 4th, 2017 I flew back to Los Angeles with my first dog, since childhood. Ginger is a rescue who followed the example of her canine companion and ate enough kibble to stay alive. Without that companion setting the example, she wouldn't eat her kibble and her stools remained runny. Not knowing any better, at that time, I simply “upgraded” her kibble. But, Ginger is stubborn and knows her own mind. No matter the brand or price paid she wouldn't eat kibble and her stools didn't improve. Thinking she might have parasites I took her to a vet who declared her parasite-free but pumped her full of antibiotics and sold me a bag of Science Diet kibble for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Ginger wouldn’t touch the vet's recommended kibble, so I continued my search for appropriate meal options. Initially, I failed and Ginger soon lost so much weight that she looked like a hungry stray. I was terrified that my ignorance would kill my dog. Fortunately, I discovered the documentary, Pet Fooled, which introduced me to species-appropriate feeding. After more research, I developed a recipe that proved to be ideal. And though Ginger was now eating her meals and had put on weight she suffered intermittent bouts of colitis. Taking a deeper dive into canine nutrition I discovered that by adding raw apple cider vinegar with mother or fermented greens her species-appropriate diet was optimized, as evidenced by the fact that she no longer suffered with colitis.
Update: For more than 4 years now and at 6 years old Ginger's stools remain perfect, she maintains the physique and energy of a much younger dog and is still enthusiastic about her meals.
